The Auspicious Beginning of the Club

Founded in 1995 to serve the woodturning needs of the Flathead Valley in Northwest Montana and beyond.

What is Glacier Woodturners Association

Glacier Woodturners Association (GWA) was formed a long time ago when three woodturners were sitting around a lathe drinking beer. Their names are Larry, Dan and John and they didn't have many friends so they decided to form a club. Dan, being the oldest and wisest of the three, recalled all of the clubs in the Flathead Valley and decided that all of the popular topics like skiing, drinking, golfing, hunting, fishing, drinking, photograhpy, pottery and quilting already had clubs. They were perplexed.

John got up to get another beer and tripped over the cord to the lathe and suddenly had a vision of what kind of club to start. A lathe club. They had a lot of beers.

Larry, who had some computer skills, searched the internet for lathe clubs and discovered an association called the American Association of Woodturners known as AAW. He discovered that if you joined this assocciation and formed a club according to its rules that they would provide you with insurance coverage if someone got hurt at one of your club events. This sounded good especially after John tripping over the lathe cord while getting a beer. Dan like that also since he was retired and didn't want anyone sueing him just because they couldn't walk and drink beer at the same time.

So off they went to form an AAW club for woodturning and the rest as they say is history.

Mission Statement

Glacier Woodturners Association does indeed have a mission and a statement, hence a mission statement. If anyone knows where it is please send me a copy so that I can include it in this web site.

Meetings

Glacier Woodturners Association also has meetings like any other club. They are held on the 3rd Saturday of each month at the Junior High School on 3 Mile Road in Kalispell, Montana. The meetings are held from 9:00 am until noon. Unlike the oragnizational meeting held in John's shop in his garage, no beer is served but there is coffee and pasteries. There is an agenda for each meeting and a specific woodturning topic is covered. See page on Meeting Schedule.

Officers

AAW required that to be a bona fide club to get the insurance benefits, we needed some responsible folks to be officers. This was a daunting task since there were only 3 founding members and they needed 4 officers. So they had to recruit at least one more member which they did. Now that the club as been around for a while they still have a hard time finding responsible folks for officers but somehow succeed. Check out the Officers and Contact Information on how to reach our officers.
